I cannot express in words how much I love this look from Talbots. I have to squee instead.
I moved from New Mexico to Boston at 18, and was there a total of 11 years. Eleven formative years. My fashion sense, such as it is, comes from Beantown. I like classic clothes, and will always pick a good, sensible Talbots jacket over something trendy from wherever. Ann Taylor, J. Crew, Banana Republic, Ralph Lauren, LL Bean. These are my go-to chains, and I pretty much never go wrong that way.
Imagine my joy, then, to see every major fashion magazine declaring classics to be back. They’re using words like refined and understated to describe this fall’s classic looks, and I honestly could not be happier. The only part I quibble with is that classics are “back,” and this is because the definition of classic is that it never goes out of style. A black sheath dress, well cut, with a strand of pearls and mid-rise pumps will always be in style. Always.
But I’ll take it. After all the fashion foolishness of recent years, I’m ecstatic to know classics are the new trendy, or something. I am super thrilled that jeans and wool riding jackets are “hip” again, because these days I’m all about equestrian chic, chicas. And I hear J. Crew has a zippered cashmere “hoodie” sweatshirt sweater…thinkin’ I’m going to have to splurge on that one!
I’ve picked a few classic looks that I love this fall from my favorite stores (and that I plan to be rockin’ in one way or another in the city and at the ranch) and put ‘em all together for ya. You’re welcome.

Cashmere hoodies! I love the idea!
I think one of the things that I have missed in recent fashion is the element of modesty. I am not talking about stone-age, no sex appeal because some skin you will send you to Hell type of modesty, but rather, the just image the possibilities types of modesty. I love the classic look that is comfortable but chic, interesting but not overdone. I love a calf length broom skirt that I can run around his parent’s ranch and please his parents conservative convictions but still feeling pretty. It will make Beloved want to pull it up when we are in a shed all by ourselves…
Of course, the little black dress in my closet needs to come out at play when we head out to town…
